Rahman Sanya is a lecturer and a researcher in the AI Lab, Makerere University. He has worked mostly in academia over the past fifteen years teaching computer science courses. His research interests include application of machine learning, computer vision, and data science methods to problems in healthcare, environmental science, and humanitarian work, especially in the context of low-income settings. His current project at Makerere University involves the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) for scaling up adolescent access to sexual and reproductive health education and services. The project aims to make a contribution towards addressing the problem of high teenage pregnancy rates in Sub-Saharan Africa. As part of community engagement work, he provides technical support to the SunbirdAI project on developing an AI tool for rural electrification site selection.
